Organizing a group of players in Shanghai
« 于: 2008-05-17, 周六 11:03:02 »
Hello there,

I am a spanish foreigner living in Shanghai, and I would like to organize some real pen & paper D&D play. I am a DM, and I need a few chinese players to start a campaign, which will be run fully in English language. If you are interested, please drop me a line or contact me. No need to have experience in D&D, just an open mind, interest in the game and the character races & classes, and we will all start from the beginning, step by step and learning to play as a team. It's also a good opportunity to practice the conversational english. :)

The sessions will be on saturdays afternoons, in Shanghai, probably in XuJiaHui area. Feel free to join!

Waiting for your comments...

    Joan

Hello Joan:

Welcom to china, I am sure u will find your teammates in such a large city.

Yet, I kindly suggest that it is not easy to run a frequent full English advanture, bacause of the languages barriers. Despite the high rate of populazation in shaghai, running an excellent full English game which requires perfect language skills in none English speaking country is a little bit hard task.

In one word, persoanly considering, I am glad to welcome you, but also wanna remind you if you indeed plan to run a campaign, that means a long way for you.

There are also some Board game cafes. You can go there to get more details.

Hope it helps.Enjoy~

Running a game in English as a  DM would be more easier than playing as a player for me.
Because most of the resources are in English ,which contains many descriptions that a DM could use.

But the players' work is to decribe what he wants in a fictive circumstance.Which is beyond my skill.

So I would say,

 practicing the conversational english,good idea.

but a really good game?you need to attract enough players good at both speaking English and D&D wriiten English, which,I'm quite sure about, are good DMs with enough players playing with them.

Well, I don't know...but perhaps some other foreigners in this forum will be interested? Also, it is quite a good way to improve the English skills through practicing in games. So were I in Shanghai, I will attand (nah, I'm not, what a pity...).

I love the 'rather than'.

Hi Joan, welcome.  As stated, many of us here are experienced, and most those would read the message (thus implying that we are comfortable with English and, to an extend, raw rulebooks) are extremely likely to be DM themselves or at least experienced players.  However I don't think that'd be a problem.

From my experience a chance to practice conversational English with a real foreigner is a strong motivator.  If you haven't visited them already, IMHO local gaming stores are good tries as well, since those who frequent them are likely to be ok with untranslated books and already has a keen interest in both trpg and in f2f campaigns.  We are stronger in online campaigns.

I believe that there are players waiting to be found, but you may wish to try more forums to maximise your chance to get in touch with them.

Good luck and God bless~

P.S. Does your campaign have anything to do with leading France soldiers fighting back England invaders?  :D

P.S.2 Hey, will the campaign use 4th edition rules?

EDIT: I posted a link to this topic in SH local group board. Hope this will help.  Google also showed interesting group gathering methods like this

Dear All,

Thanks a lot for your comments, I think they are pretty useful! Special thanks to Sheepy for posting in another thread which would have been difficult for me to find (as I can't understand much of the hanzi), and for the link suggested. Indeed, I didn't know much about this portal boefore, I found the BBS by luck, when searching for potential chinese players. I see I came to the write place, with lots of good DM's who can share their knowledge... aahhh... good stuff to find masters here... It means this game is much more alive than expected. And well, I have enough patience to find the right players, and as Roger say, it will probably be a long time to finally run a smooth campaign... but I am positive! :D

It's also right what 树林熊 says... It's difficult to take a step as a player if you are not so confident in the English language... Anyway, I encourage anybody. I also learned english mostly thanks to the D&D when I was a teenager, reading and learning about the words of the books, and later practicing with europeans when working at the bars during summer holidays... It seems interesting to see how every week you find it more easy to talk if you keep practicing...

Answering to Sheepy, and regarding to my campaign... not real historical background. I love fantasy, although quite realistic playing as well. I will focus in the Kingdoms of Kalamar setting, as it's one of my favourites, very similar to the old Mystara and extensely developed. And about 4th edition... Hehe, I'm still not updated on it, too much work as to read new rules now that i just finished with the 3.5, hahaha. So I guess that I will still be on 3.5 for a while. :)

Well, alright! Thanks again, and I will be expecting to hear more from you!

Best wishes,

    Joan
