On November 16, Wizards of the Coast will launch a brand new web-based version of the D&D Insider Character Builder. The current downloadable version will remain functional, but will no longer be available for download or updated with content after the new version goes live. Here are the highlights of the new Character Builder:
* New Design: Completely redesigned from top to bottom in Microsoft Silverlight as a robust character creation wizard.
* No Download: The Character Builder is served from the D&D site
* PC and Mac Compatible: Requires an Internet connection and Silverlight plug-in
* Access is easy: Just enter the D&D site, log in, and launch the Character Builder from the Tool Box or the Character Builder tools page.
* Characters in the Cloud: All characters you create are saved on our database. No need to save Character Builder files on your hard drive anymore.
* File Import: You can easily import your character s created in the previous version to the new Character Builder.
* Previous Data: Includes all character-building data you enjoyed in the previous versions.
* New Data Releases: Dark Sun and D&D Essentials data will debut with the new version.

Here are some answers to some of the most popular questions in this thread:
Can you export characters?
This answer is straight out of the FAQ - While this feature won’t be available at launch, we understand that this is important to our players and are working on rolling this functionality out soon. For now, you can import your characters into the new tool, modify and save them to your subscription profile.
Can you run the new Character Builder offline?
Another one straight out of the FAQ - No. This version of the D&D Character Builder requires an active connection to the internet.
Will it have Dark Sun and Essentials?
Yes and yes.
Can we still save characters if they are home-brew?
Currently there is no real homebrew ability in the new Character Builder, but again, this is something we know is very important and hope to have more information on soon.
Will there be an iPad/iPhone version of the viewer?
We are exploring our options and when we have any official news, we’ll let you know.
How does this effect login, where you could have 5 downloads per login?
You have to be logged in to your account to access your characters in the new Character Builder.
Is there currently a way to share your character with your DM?
Beyond physically printing it out, it’s possible to print to PDF which would give you a digital version that you could share with your DM or others.
Will we be able to access the online character builder after our sub runs out?
No. In order to access the new character builder, you will need to have an active subscription
Since it is launching on November 16th, will it include Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdom?
No. Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms will be included in an upcoming update.
Will the old Character Builder continue to work?
Yes. If you have the downloadable character builder, it will continue to work, though it will receive no new updates.
Will we still be able to print out character sheets and power cards?
Yes, the new character builder has all that functionality.
What about the monster builder?
We don’t have any new information to share about the monster builder, its updates, or a web-based version. As soon as we do, you’ll hear it from us here.

1. 於 11 月 16 日, 海岸巫師會推出一個全新的在線版 D&D Insider 角色產生器 (CB), 包括 DS/HFL 資源.
2. 目前的 CB 可以繼續用, 但會停止更新並取消下載.
3. 使用 Silverlight, 需要保持在線, 需要付費訂閱.
4. 角色會中央儲存, 可以載入現有角色, 可以打印/存成 PDF.

In general, I don't see why not. There may be issues working with the Character Builder on the same character at the same time from multiple locations, so please don't do that.

Plans in that area are being discussed.

反正我已經取消了訂閱. 巨龍誌和地城誌質素每況越下 (我懷念三版的巨龍誌), 好端端的 CB 沒事走去重新做個在線版, 原版在明知不會繼續的情況下更新到一半變殘廢, 一開始的角色塑做器和遊戲桌到現在都沒交付, 怪物產生器半死不活不去修, 眾多玩家要求的戰鬥/戰術管理器也當作聽不見...
大不了只是沒了資料庫. 三版還不是那樣手工查勘誤做卡.

不同的是, 今次不是計劃, 在線產生器已經完成, 負載平衡和尤餘測試也跑過了.

DDI 的目前售價是 6 美刀 一個月 (一年) 到 10 美刀 一個月 (一個月). 據聞這國外大型網遊的價格差不多?
有人比喻這是一個網遊 - 你要付費在線, 你要在線做角色, 不過這網遊不包括遊戲的部分.

這真是很過分啊~~~~essential是我見過最騙錢的出書方法~~~~現在盜版CB時代也要終結了

他們可不單止終結盜版 CB. 等他的客服恢復我就會停訂. 翻譯也不再幹了, 完成手上的莎罕妮就撤.
情況是這樣的: PsiP 出了, DS 出了, 錢繼續收, CB 沒更新. Essentials 出了, 混亂非常, 還是沒更新. 在這段期間巨龍誌的文章數量和質素明顯持續下降. 十月來到, 更新來了, 將 MB 和 CB 變成一團糟, 妨礙到正常使用.
這時, 開發員說我們會恢復正常的一個月一次的更新程序, 並會有新的工具作為現有工具的配套 (supplements).
十一月來到. 頭兩日過去, 沒有如常的更新. 第三天, 消息宣佈, 舊 CB 將被斬.
你沒有導出角色的功能, 沒有 HR 功能, 沒有利用多項戰役資源的功能, 不支援手機和平版電腦, 如果你無線斷線的話你甚麼都不能做, 而且你停訂的話他們過一年就刪檔.
而且因為不支援導出檔案, 直接導致各種現有和開發中的第三方工具不能配套使用, 其中最主要 iplay4e.
而他們目前依然堅持這是個"升級", 是其他工具的 "配套". 我的個人理解是, 在 CB 廢掉 MB 壞掉的情況下, 其他工具指 Online Compendium 和 Name Generator.
官網現在去到 1300+ 帖討論, 我只在等客服恢復就會加入用腳投票的其他人.

牛b版已經是我看到過最騙錢的出書方法了,在youtube上說~我們把書變小了，價格低了，新手包里有所有你需要得東西，DM包里有DM需要的所有東西....
結果是heroes of fallen land 居然連完整的戰鬥規則都沒給出，新手包做到2級人物就封頂了~
謊話這樣編~~現在有弄這個影響廣大玩家使用CB~·太對不起玩家了

Perhaps the greatest thing that Wizards has accomplished in the digital arena, certainly since the launch of the new edition of D&D, is the Character Builder. Since the launch of this program, we’ve been working on a number of ways to improve both the tools and the experience. The first place we decided to make changes was to move from a client-based to a web-based tool set. We are moving to a web-based solution to make the tools accessible to multiple platforms. The web-based solution makes it easier for us to react to new technology opportunities, such as tablets and mobile devices. We also wanted to move to a solution that promotes individual account ownership and hinders piracy. Finally, we wanted a solution that would more easily interact with our community site and Facebook, for example.
We’ll launch the new Character Builder with a known issues list and FAQ, as well as with other roadmaps to highlight launch functionality and to lay out what we plan to do with future builds of the tool. Tool by tool, we’ll use the known issues lists and FAQs to make sure that there’s as little confusion as possible about what works, what we’d like to do in the future, and what we won’t be tackling in the near term.
There are five things I really, really like about the new Character Builder.
1. It’s ultimately portable. I can use it on any computer or computer-like device, wherever I am.
2. It’s both PC and Mac friendly. I can access it from either kind of machine.
3. There are multiple character sheet options. I can pick an Essentials character sheet or a sheet that takes advantage of the digital medium, and we can add other versions of sheets as demand warrants.
4. The user interface is better. We’ve learned a lot, tested a lot, and made a tool that is easier to navigate and use.
5. Content filters are better. The D&D game is loaded with content, and the new Character Builder offers lots of ways to filter that content for you. You can make choices up front to limit the amount of information you’re bombarded with, and you can add more elements later as your play style and game mastery demands.
OK, there are six things.
6. More agile. The new tools allow us to respond faster to customer needs. We can make updates and changes to the system more quickly, and the new content is pushed live almost instantaneously—content updates just happen, with no downloads required.

7. Dark Sun and Essentials. The new tool includes options so that you can create characters using the Dark Sun Campaign Setting and Heroes of the Fallen Lands as well as with material from all products already loaded into the previous tool. And more content is on the way.

非授權用戶應該比較多.
但問題應該是 "會因此而付費的非授權用戶比較多, 還是因此失去的用戶比較多".
就我理解, 音樂工業也犯過這種錯誤.
